INTRODUCTION
Protecting the French language and culture has been the focus of the province of Quebec for decades. Even today, the car license plate logo is Je Me Souviens, which is a reminder that the French people should remember the fall of the French armies in New France at the hands of the British in the 1700s. Since the 1960s, there has been a movement in Quebec to strengthen the distinct French society of Quebec. This movement has included several language laws, 2 referendums on the separation of Quebec from the rest of Canada and the formation of the “language police” to ensure that the French language is secure with no threat from other languages, primarily English. The thesis of this report is to show that despite all the advances made by the French in Qanada over the years, the province continues to use the threat of independence and the enforcement of the language laws to ensure the safety of the French language.
